5,6-Dihydroxyindole (DHI) is an important intermediate of melanin, was first found in a plant in nature. The pure 5,6- dihydroxyindole is a colorless needle crystal with a melting point of 140℃, which is soluble in hot water but insoluble in petroleum ether. It is stable in crystalline state, but it quickly oxidizes into melanin-like substance in slightly alkaline solution.
